Dewey Decimal Classification Notes

                       Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)


DDC is the most widely used classification system  it is published in 1876 by Melvil Dewey ,It is used more than 138 countries ,it has been translated into over 30 languages .it is divided into 10 main classes these 10 main classes covers entire world knowledge , each main class is sib-divided in 10 division.

Now DDC is published in full and abridge edition by OCLC (Online Computer Library Centre)

 Ten Main Classes are:

000-Computer Science, Information and general works

100-Philosophy and Psychology

200- Religion

300- Social Science

400- Language

500- Science

600- Technology

700- Art and Recreation

800- Literature

900- History & Geography

 

Class 000- It is the most general class, and it is not limited to any one specific discipline, eg. Encyclopaedias, Newspapers, Journals, Periodicals. General class is also used for certain specialised disciplines eg. Computer Science, Library & Information Science, Journalism

Class 100- It covers philosophy, parapsychology and occultism, psychology.

Class 200- It covers religion.

Class 300- It includes sociology, anthropology, statistics, political science, economics, public administration, transportation, customs etc.

Class 400- Linguistics and specific languages, Literature etc.

Class 500- It covers Natural Science and Mathematics.

Class 600- Technology

Class 700- It covers arts, music, sports and games

Class 800- It covers Literature and includes rhetoric prose, poetry drama etc.

Class 900- It covers history and geography

Some important points about DDC

·         Edition 1 of DDC collects 44 pages, it is published with the title “A classification and subject index for cataloguing and arranging the books and pamphlet of library”.

·         In Edition 1, index is used with schedule in 1876.

·         In Edition 2, form division were used in 1885.

·         In Edition 4, abridge edition were used in 1894.

·         In Edition 14, four tables were used in 1942.

·         In Edition 16, two volumes were used in 1958.

·         In Edition 18, 19 & 20, two volumes were used.

·         In Edition 21 & 22, four volumes were used.

·         In Edition 18 & 21, seven tables were used.

·         In Edition 23, four volume and six tables were used.

·         Edition 22& 23 Both are in CD-Rom

·         Electronic Edition of DDC published in 1993.

·         Online Edition published with the name “Web Dewey” in 2003.
