Short note on Dr. S R Ranganthan

S. R. Ranganathan



  • Dr. S. R. Rangnathan was the Father of the Library Movement in India.
  • Ranganathan started hid professional life as a Mathematician.
  • Ranganathan started his teaching career from 1917.
  • S.R. Ranganathan joined the Presidency College, Madras in July 1921as Assistant Professor of Mathematics.
  • In January 1924 Ranganathan appointed the first Librarian of Madras University.
  • Open the Shelved system and provide open access.
  • Under the Madras Library Association, Ranganathan initiated "A School of Library Science" in 1929.
  • In 1945 S. Radhakrishnan invited Ranganathan to develop the Library System of Banaras Hindu University.
  • In 1947 Sir Maurice Gwyer invited Ranganathan to develop the library system of Delhi University.
  • In 1965 he became National Research Professor in Library science.
  • Ranganathan was honored by two universities namely  Delhi University and Pittsburgh University by awarding "Doctor of Letters degrees" in 1948 and 1964. 
  • He was the developer of the first major analytico synthetic classification system.
  • Dr. S. R. Rangnathan develope the format of the 'Library Development plan for India.
  • Dr. Rajendra prasad awarded him with "PADAM SHREE".
