S. R. Ranganathan
- Born: 12 August 1892, Tamil Nadu
- Full name: Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan
- Education: Madras Christian College, University College London, University of Madras
- Occupation: Author, academic, mathematician, librarian
- Dr. S. R. Rangnathan was the Father of the Library Movement in India.
- Ranganathan started hid professional life as a Mathematician.
- Ranganathan started his teaching career from 1917.
- S.R. Ranganathan joined the Presidency College, Madras in July 1921as Assistant Professor of Mathematics.
- In January 1924 Ranganathan appointed the first Librarian of Madras University.
- Open the Shelved system and provide open access.
- Under the Madras Library Association, Ranganathan initiated "A School of Library Science" in 1929.
- In 1945 S. Radhakrishnan invited Ranganathan to develop the Library System of Banaras Hindu University.
- In 1947 Sir Maurice Gwyer invited Ranganathan to develop the library system of Delhi University.
- In 1965 he became National Research Professor in Library science.
- Ranganathan was honored by two universities namely Delhi University and Pittsburgh University by awarding "Doctor of Letters degrees" in 1948 and 1964.
- He was the developer of the first major analytico synthetic classification system.
- Dr. S. R. Rangnathan develope the format of the 'Library Development plan for India.
- Dr. Rajendra prasad awarded him with "PADAM SHREE".
